When You Feel Disconnected from Yourself
Have you ever felt like you’re on zoned out, watching your life unfold from the outside, as if you’re not completely “there”? Or do you feel like your thoughts, emotions, or body aren’t your own?
At Catalyst Psyche Inc, we offers trauma-informed therapy for those who are experiencing dissociation, depersonalization, or derealization—states that are commonly described as feeling emotionally numb, spaced out, unreal, or lost in their own minds.
Understanding Dissociation and Depersonalization
- Dissociation is a survival mechanism in reaction to emotional stress or trauma. It can leave you feeling disconnected from your ideas, body, identity, or even time itself. You may feel “zoned out,” as if you’re simply going through the motions.
- Depersonalization seems like you’re a stranger to yourself, divorced from your body and feelings, as if you’re looking in from the outside.
- Derealization is the feeling that the world around you is not real, as if you are in a dream or a movie.
These are not symptoms of being “broken” or “crazy.” They are your mind’s protective reflexes to cope. However, when these experiences continue, they can be upsetting and interfere with normal life.
