Feeling lost in life... Find meaning in life through psychology

The Feeling That Has No Name is a question many people struggle with — especially when life starts to feel empty, directionless, or confusing.

Many people walk into therapy not because they want to die — but because they no longer know why they’re living. If you’ve ever felt lost in life or questioned your purpose, you’re not alone.

She is not alone. Over years of clinical practice, I’ve come to recognise this as one of the most common struggles of our time — not just anxiety or depression, but something deeper: the loss of meaning in life.

The Feeling That Has No Name

This experience is often described as an existential crisis or existential frustration. It is not laziness or ingratitude. It is a psychological state where the need for meaning and purpose in life feels unmet.

Many people say things like: “I feel lost in life,” or “What’s the point of anything?” These are not signs of weakness — they are signs that your inner world is searching for direction.

The concept of meaning was deeply explored by Viktor Frankl in
Man’s Search for Meaning.

“Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue. It is the side effect of living a life directed toward something greater than oneself.”
— Viktor Frankl

Why Meaning Matters More Than Happiness

Psychologically, the goal of life may not be happiness — but meaning. While happiness is temporary, meaning gives direction and depth.

When people focus only on pleasure or comfort, they often feel empty. But when they engage in meaningful work, relationships, or growth, they feel more alive — even if it involves struggle.

The Three Roads to Meaning

1. Through what we give to the world

Meaning comes from contribution — your work, creativity, and impact. Even small acts can create a sense of purpose in life.

2. Through what we receive from the world

Meaning can also come from love, beauty, connection, and presence. Being fully present allows you to experience life more deeply.

3. Through the attitude toward unavoidable suffering

Even in pain, humans have the freedom to choose their response. This is one of the most powerful sources of meaning.

This is where meaning of life psychology becomes important — it helps us understand why we feel lost and how humans create purpose.

Why We Feel Lost in Life Today

In today’s world, we have more options but less clarity. Social media often creates confusion between success and meaning.

We confuse being busy with having purpose. We distract ourselves instead of asking deeper questions. But distraction is not direction.

Meaning Is Not Found — It Is Responded To

Meaning is not something you discover like a hidden object. It is something life asks of you in each moment.

Instead of asking “What is the meaning of life?”, a more helpful question is: “What is life asking of me right now?”

Your response — through your choices, actions, and relationships — creates meaning.

A Note If You Feel Lost Right Now

If this resonates with you, it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It means something in you is searching for depth and purpose.

You don’t need to have everything figured out. But you can begin by taking your inner questions seriously.

“Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, nor a quest for power, but a quest for meaning.”
— Viktor Frankl

Understanding meaning of life psychology is not about finding one answer, but about learning how to respond to life’s questions.
